(Modi Script) The Maharashtra government’s Marathi Language Department has come under criticism after it reportedly released a list of only 30 individuals authorized to read and interpret Modi Script, triggering widespread dissatisfaction among Modi Script experts and researchers across the state.
Critics claim that the decision has disrupted the work of many scholars engaged in the transcription of historical documents, including records related to Kunbi community entries and other archival materials.
In response, Modi Script experts and researchers from different parts of Maharashtra have united to demand the immediate withdrawal of the concerned Government Resolution (GR). A delegation met Manoj Jarange Patil and submitted a memorandum seeking intervention in the matter.
According to Modi Script researchers Amit Adsule and Chhaya Eknath Naik, one or two trained Modi Script experts have been working in almost every taluka of Maharashtra for years, translating historical documents into modern Marathi.
They also pointed out that in 2023, the government itself had acknowledged the appointment of Modi Script experts across talukas. In such circumstances, restricting official recognition to only 30 individuals is unfair and should be reconsidered immediately.
The experts further demanded that all qualified professionals working in the field of Modi Script be given equal opportunities and that the government formulate a revised policy to ensure that ongoing transcription and historical documentation work is not adversely affected.
