(Public issue) Following the accidental demise of popular leader and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Ashabai Anantrao Pawar on 28 January 2026, a wave of grief spread across Maharashtra and the country. While the state government declared three days of official mourning, a very different picture was witnessed on the controversial Manmad Road in Ahilyanagar city.
(Public issue) At exactly 12:05 a.m., in front of the Zhopdi Canteen, asphalting work was found in full swing under the Public Works Department (PWD). Notably, throughout the entire operation, not a single responsible PWD official was present at the site. Only labourers, machinery, dumpers and tankers were seen carrying out the work through the night.
(Public issue) At a time when all government offices remain closed during official mourning and many activities and works are suspended, the question arises: on whose orders was road asphalting allowed to continue at midnight? Local citizens have expressed strong resentment over this.
It has also come to light that by morning, asphalting strips covering several kilometres had been completed. On the already controversial Manmad Road, questions are now being raised about whether this work is in accordance with rules, who inspected the quality, and why officials were absent. No official clarification has been issued so far.
Citizens feel that this “night-time game” carried out amid a sombre atmosphere reflects the administration’s insensitivity and lack of planning.

Will senior officials of the concerned department finally wake up and order an inquiry into this matter, or will “the night-time game goes on” remain the reality? This is the question being asked by the people of Ahilyanagar.
