(Heritage conservation) To promote the conservation and scientific management of historical monuments in Maharashtra, the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Maharashtra has launched an important initiative. Through the open “Site Management Plan (SMP) Competition 2026”, young architects holding an M.Arch (Conservation) degree will get an opportunity to showcase their skills in preserving historical heritage.
Eligible architects participating in the competition will be given the opportunity to prepare a Site Management Plan for protected monuments across Maharashtra. Importantly, architects who demonstrate outstanding work during the process will have a chance to be included in the empanelled list of the Archaeology Department. This will open new professional opportunities for young conservation architects.
The competition is being organized by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Pune, along with the Ratnagiri Division. The initiative aims to encourage new ideas, modern technology, and a scientific approach toward heritage conservation. According to experts, such initiatives will help preserve Maharashtra’s rich cultural heritage more effectively.
Interested participants must submit their applications online through the provided Google Form link. The last date to apply is 31 March 2026. After submitting the online form, applicants must take a printout and submit it along with the required documents and two passport-size photographs to the Assistant Director (Archaeology), Divisional Office, Pune.

This initiative is expected to strengthen the conservation of historical monuments in Maharashtra while giving young conservation architects the opportunity to turn their ideas into practical projects.
