(World news) When a pilot issues a “Mayday” signal, many people wonder what exactly has happened. This is one of the most serious and urgent warnings in the aviation sector, used only in life-threatening emergencies.
(World news) The word “Mayday,” pronounced “Mede” in Marathi, is an international distress signal. It is used by pilots or ship captains when they are in serious danger and need immediate help. The term originates from the French phrase “m’aider,” which means “help me.”
(World news) Due to the extreme seriousness of this signal, it is repeated three times in communication to avoid any misunderstanding — “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday.” This message means that the aircraft or ship is in grave danger and requires urgent assistance.
When is a “Mayday” Signal Used?
It is used in situations such as engine failure, fire in the system, fuel exhaustion, loss of control, or any other life-threatening incident.
Usually, once this signal is sent to the air traffic control center, the emergency response system is immediately activated. In aviation, this signal represents a pilot’s cry for life-saving help.
Such situations may arise due to bad weather, technical malfunctions, bird strikes, or human error. That is why, the moment a “Mayday” signal is issued, the entire system goes on high alert and rescue operations are launched immediately.
