(Article) Sense of humour is the ability to perceive and enjoy amusement, to laugh at life, and to make others laugh too. Being funny is one of the best things you can do for your health and happiness. Research shows that people vulnerable to depression often relapse when exposed to negative situations, but humour helps guard against depression and improves overall quality of life. In fact, many colleges now teach students how humour can help achieve business objectives, build stronger organisations, and create lasting connections.

Though many people believe they lack a “funny bone,” humour is actually a social skill that can be developed. It is a universal language with the power to unite people, create a sense of community, and strengthen bonds. A good sense of humour relieves stress, boosts confidence, improves social connections, and contributes to both physical and mental well-being.

Humour takes many forms:

Self-deprecating humour – making jokes at one’s own expense.

Observational humour – drawn from everyday life and human behaviour.

Slapstick – exaggerated physical comedy.

Dark humour/black comedy – finding humour in morbid or taboo subjects.

Satire – using irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose flaws in society or individuals.

Puns – witty wordplay that plays on multiple meanings.

Situational humour – comedy that arises from specific situations.
