Ahmednagar Politics In the Nagar City Assembly constituency, a major contest is expected between the incumbent MLA Sangram Jagtap from Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction and Abhishek Kalmkar from Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction. So far, it seems that Jagtap is ahead in terms of campaign efforts and organizational support. Although the opposition has entered the election fray with an agenda focused mainly on criticizing Sangram Jagtap, they currently lack any positive plans or solutions beyond their critiques.
While there are many issues related to MLA Jagtap that the opposition could raise, they don’t appear to be as aggressive as they could be. Issues such as road infrastructure, water supply, corrupt and inefficient municipal services, maintenance of parks, encroachment on open spaces, street lighting, inflation, unemployment, frequent traffic congestion in the city, flooding in homes during monsoons, flyover accidents, and land encroachment are all concerns close to Nagar residents’ hearts. However, no opposition leader seems willing to question these matters.
Some corporators and officials privately state that due to MLA Jagtap’s focus on municipal administration, several wards have suffered. Residents wonder if they elected an MLA or a mayor, yet the opposition fails to leverage this sentiment. Additionally, the fragmented opposition is seen as a strength for Sangram Jagtap. The Jagtap family’s long-standing involvement in politics and their well-established network of workers are unmatched by the opposition.
While the opposition has various issues they could use against Jagtap, their lack of aggression raises the question among voters: should they vote for a new candidate simply to oppose Sangram Jagtap?
“Citizens generally prefer positive politics over negative, which tends to have a limited lifespan,” so the opposition should at least now have the courage to present what they would do for Ahmednagar if elected. Otherwise, the situation could become challenging for the Mahavikas Aghadi.
