(Achievement) Senior journalist and co-editor of the digital media platform The Wire, Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty, has created history by taking charge as the President of the Press Club of India in New Delhi. She has become the first woman to hold this position in the prestigious institution.
In the recently held election, Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty secured a clear majority with 109 votes. Her rival candidates received 23 and 18 votes respectively. Notably, her entire panel also won by a large margin.
In this election, senior journalist Jatin Gandhi was elected as Vice President, while journalist Afzal Imam was elected as General Secretary.
Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty has been actively involved in journalism for several decades and has worked in key positions at national media organizations, including The Hindu. Her fearless and in-depth reporting on social, political, and democratic issues across the country – especially concerning Northeast India – has been widely acknowledged.
The election of a woman as President of the Press Club of India is being regarded as a historic and inspiring moment for Indian journalism. Journalistic circles have expressed that this milestone is significant from the perspective of women’s leadership, press freedom, and the autonomy of the media.
