(Goa news) Organ donation is one of the greatest advances in modern medicine. It offers a second chance at life to people of all ages who have life-threatening diseases affecting their vital organs. Almost everyone is a potential organ or tissue donor. There is no official age limit for this; anyone above 18 years can come forward and give the gift of life to someone in need.
(Goa news) Organ donation is a surgical process that replaces a failing organ with a healthy one from someone else who no longer needs it. Healthy individuals can choose to donate certain organs and tissues that they can spare while maintaining their own well-being.
(Goa news) For example, one can live with only one kidney and donate the other to someone in need. Similarly, a person can donate a portion of their liver while still alive, as the liver regenerates to nearly full size over time. The incredible part is that the donated portion also grows to a fully functional size in the recipient.
Other organs and tissues that can be donated while alive include the uterus, skin, bone marrow, heart valves, corneas, and blood vessels. Meanwhile, organs that can be donated after death include the heart, lungs, liver, eyes, hands, kidneys, pancreas, and more. Additionally, whole-body donation after death plays a crucial role in helping medical students and researchers understand the human body and advance medical science.
One organ donor can save up to eight lives and improve the lives of 75 people through tissue donation. An organ donor provides a life-giving opportunity to those at the end of their hope and, in return, receives countless blessings.
Becoming an organ donor in India is a relatively easy task. August 3rd is celebrated as National Organ Donation Day in India. One can register as an organ donor through various websites, including the official NOTTO website. It is also essential to inform family members about this decision, as they play a major role in the process after the donor’s death. Furthermore, one can support the cause by spreading awareness about organ donation within the community.
Donating is a selfless and rewarding act. Studies have shown that living donors live just as long as those who have never donated.
In a world where every second counts for those waiting on transplant lists, understanding and participating in organ donation can truly mean the difference between life and death.
